Malaysian police have to day arrested Anwar Ibrahim one day after he stole the shine from PM Abdullah Badawi's government. Anwar was arrested in front of his house the day after he gave a stirring performance against a lackluster Information Minister Shabery Cheek who could not hold the weight of Anwar's continuous revelations of the goverment's missteps in handling the nation's economy.

Malaysians all over laughed at the Information Minister's inability to counter the former Deputy Prime Minister's strongly worded and well prepared arguments. Even government officials were seen embarrassed as the Information Minister sidestepped crucial questions about the economy from the panel and tried to accuse Anwar for his personal misgivings instead.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has defended the police for setting up road blocks around the city in anticipation of a public demonstration, causing massive traffic jams Monday.



The Prime Minister instead blamed the traffic jams to those who planned to hold demonstrations and said the police were only doing their job in maintaining order and public safety.

“The police are trying to reduce hindrances and reduce traffic jams (that would be caused by the demonstration) too,” he said, adding that businesses and shops affected by demonstrations held inside the city expected the police to ensure disturbances were kept at bay.

“But at the same time the demonstrators say police have no business disturbing them. The police have a responsibility in ensuring there is no trouble and all is safe for the public,” he said.

Abdullah reminded the demonstrators that he had advised them to hold their rallies at stadiums where “they can scream at the top of their voice and “not at these places (in the streets) because people have the right to go about their business in peace.”

Federal Government Cuts 80% Off Penang's Budget Allocation

GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s Federal Government allocation for development has been cut by almost 80% after the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP) mid-term review in June and the state government is demanding an explanation.

“In 2006, the state’s development allocation under the 9MP was set at RM6.152bil out of the total allocation of RM200bil, which roughly equals to 3.1%.

“After the mid-term review, the allocation has been cut by some RM4.7bil despite the 9MP’s increased total allocation to RM230bil. Currently, Penang’s allocation stands at RM1.452bil or 0.6% of the total allocation,” said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

He said the cut in allocation was aimed at punishing Penangites.

“The state is very dissatisfied and angry with the Federal Government’s acts that are no different from acts of sabotage on Penang’s economy,” he said.

JR: "This is what you get for rejecting BN" seems to be the message here. I guess this is what we deserved for "creating history" in Penang. There is nothing for Penangites to worry about though, as BN has only one more term to go before they are HISTORY. Anyway, you can't miss something you never had, or never wished for!

Malaysian PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has absolve himself from any blame in the recent defeat of Barisan Nasional in 2 states. In refusing to blame himself as the cause the PM said it was all due to other UMNO members sabotaging the party and NOT himself. The PM was quick to shift the blame to his own party members after a closed-door briefing session with about 1,000 Umno grassroots leaders at the Putra World Trade Centre on Sunday.

PM Abdullah was adamant that if UMNO collapses after the recent election, he has nothing to do with it and didn't want to be seen as the reason why UMNO and his Barisan counterparts did so badly in the recent election. As a mark of his statemanship the PM elaborated that sabotage by UMNO members could not be attributed to his weak leadership nor his inability to control his own members.

Joceline Tan lays it out for UMNO in case they are still too arrogant to admit it:-

Like they say, "the writing was on the wall", but UMNO chosed to ignore the signs and believed in the hype created by their own media dogs (e.g. The Star and Zainuddin Maidin) until they ultimately believed they were too powerful to be brought down. The Star has now began to change their tune (is it the fear of a backlash?) and Zam should start to learn from history himself.

“We give good service but we've been dealing with the symptoms, not the root causes. A classic case was Chew Mei Fun losing to Tony Pua,” said Sim. MCA's Chew, a former parliamentary secretary, was famous for her dedicated service in PJ Utara. But the DAP argued so well that Parliament is for legislators who can talk about national issues and not a “YB Longkang” that her campaign literally went down the drain.

Even Gerakan, which started off as the voice of conscience, lost its way when it allowed the politics of the day to take over. Said Penang Gerakan politician Teng Chang Yeow: “We keep asking the Chinese for full support so that they will be wellrepresented in government. But wasn't that what they gave us in 2004, total support? Now you know why they're fed-up!

“Leaders like Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Khairy Jamaluddin must realise this. People equated their behaviour with Umno's inability to change with the times. If an Oxford-educated guy still talks like an Umno politician of 10 years ago, what hope do we have for the rest of Umno?”


"I don't have any property in Penang!"

“The writing is on the wall. We cannot hesitate over reforms. I won't say the Opposition will do much better than us but they can't do worse than us,” said Dr Sak.

Our highly acute Ex-Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin of course sums it best on what went wrong for UMNO by just opening his mouth:

I do not believe SMS and blogs had a huge impact on the recently-concluded general election.

It (outcome of the general election) could be more of a protest the people had in mind – to vent their anger on the government.

It is a fact that there are more people owning a mobile phone than a computer.

It is common for the village folk to receive SMS nowadays but again some may not know how to retrieve them.
