Dyana Sofya: A New Hope For The Malays?

Why is a political novice like her getting so much attention by the powers-that-be?



The entry of Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud onto the political scene has been met by an unprecedented and sustained attack by some of the biggest guns in Umno: an Umno Supreme Council member, the head of Wanita Umno and none other than Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself.

Is it because she represents everything that Umno does not want the Malays to be? – Capable, Confident and Unshackled?

Unshackled from the unhealthy culture of dependency that Umno has created and reinforced through a constant stream of propaganda and paranoia – all with the cynical aim of perpetuating Umno’s hegemony.

The unshackling of the Malay psyche spells the beginning of the end for the gravy train called Umno because it means that Umno can no longer take for granted that Malays will vote for them. This is why they are so desperate to kill off Dyana Sofya’s political career before it has even begun.

Dyana Sofya is an even bigger threat than more established and prominent Malay opposition figures for the simple reason that her motives cannot be so easily brought into question. Going by Umno’s narrative, Nurul Izzah Anwar is part of a political dynasty, Ariff Sabri is a disgruntled Umno man and Zairil Khir Johari is not a “real” Malay.

Yet it is not as easy to cast aspersions on an entrant like Dyana Sofya, particularly when in their own estimation, she stands more to lose than to gain. She is a middle class Malay who grew up in Malaysia and graduated from UiTM (surprise,surprise!) with a law degree. And to top it off - her mother is an Umno member!

This is something Umno’s leaders simply cannot fathom or accept because they remain stuck in their feudal mindset. And it panics them. It scares the shit out of them that - there may be more Dyana Sofyas out there!

Malays whose conscience cannot be bought and who will not be cowed. Malays who choose to live by the ideals of truth, equality and justice and who wish to build a better Malaysia hand in hand with their fellow countrymen.

It is time we showed Umno that they are right to be scared!

The use of sex videos among other ill-thoughtout strategies to win over the rakyat are beginning to backfire over Najib and BN.

Three decisions on the part of BN in the last two weeks are leading to tectonic shifts within the electorate, and thus strengthen the opposition’s position nationally.

These are:

1. The use of sex videos against PAS and possibly other opposition politicians.

2. The fielding of Perkasa leader Zulkifli Noordin in Shah Alam.

3. The action by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in not recognising DAP’s central executive committee (CEC). 


The combined effect of these moves have strengthened the opposition coalition and negatively impact the BN’s position with the electorate in the lead up to the May 5 general election.

No winner in MCA vs DAP debate

But there IS a clear LOSER and interesting sideshow 

The recent debate by DAP and MCA was very much hoo-ha and not so much in real action. Ir was like waiting for Transformers 2 and getting Scooby Doo instead.

However the highlight of the event must have been the Q&A session where an interesting lady brought up some very (un?)pertinent issues but managed to score high points in visibility.

Jessie Ooi (now dubbed the Tow Truck Lady by netizens) stepped forward during Q&A and showed her prowess as an upcoming MCA leader but managed to get her foot shot-off and at the same time managed to show everyone how low MCA has sunk.

He was being questioned as a witness to a corruption case involving RM 2,400. Yes two thousand and four hundred ringgit as opposed to the RM 4 billion (PKFZ) and many more millions exposed cases involving the ruling party (Khir Toyo) which the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) has chosen to conveniently ignore.

For RM2400 the MACC questioned Teoh Beng Hock, 30, an aide of Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, throughout the night and the next morning he was found dead apparently after falling from some floors up the MACC building. Now, a lot of questions are being asked. Who is responsible? What drove him to jump if he did jump?

In The Sun today, MACC advisory panel member Tan Sri Robert Phang, who revealed that the panel will meet on Thursday to discuss the case, said: "If a person has been detained and interrogated for more than six hours, past midnight and right up to early in the morning, I view this is abuse of power.

Teoh's family has also been reported to distrust any investigation results by MACC and by the Malaysian Police. How can you not side with them with the overwhelming evidence of the selective prosecution by MACC and our Polis whom have always gone after the opposition members, and even more so recently as the Malaysian government try their utmost best to bring down the present Selangor state government which is under opposition rule. (Perak being the other state recently won back by the ruling party using highly questionable tactics).

Call for Royal Commission? What good would it do as even the last RC resulted in no action taken against the infamous "king-maker" Lingam despite obvious evidence to prosecute him.

One could only see all this happening in a country where politics have become the be-all and end-all and freedom and justice is just another dirty word for the public as like most foul-words they are often said and never seen.

And for once can we see our Polis actually catch the real crook (instead of the usual suicide classification), or the MACC actually catch someone from inside the government?
